Coming back to the pun in 'The Rainbow' poem, the idea that the rainbow was an everlasting, holy and natural symbol must certainly have crossed Wordsworth's mind. He could not help but recall God's promise to Noah about the "bow" of the rainbow in Gen. 9 :12-16 that "the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh".
